Fairly often, people ask me, “What is your favorite part of the wedding?”
I have two favorite parts. The first part is the recessional. It might seem like an odd choice, but I get such a kick out of watching the couple walk away together for the first time as husband and wife. There are always huge smiles everywhere.
My other favorite part is the dancing. I have heard that a lot of photographers leave after the cake cutting, but most of my clients choose to use me all the way through the reception, and I’m glad they do. The photos really get fun once people loosen up a bit and start to get down on the dance floor!
This wedding scored an A+ on both categories. Just wait until you see Heather’s smile as she’s walking out with Jeremy. It was raining, everything was delayed, and yet they were still so, so happy.
As for the dancing, let’s just say there were some real pros in attendance!
The day started at Style One Salon in downtown Salem. I was impressed with this salon because the girls actually finished there ahead of schedule. That almost never happens.
I love when there is plenty of prep time scheduled, because I can slow down and do some experimenting. These next two shots were free-lensed with my 50mm.
Next, they headed to the Hidden Valley County Club to finish getting made up. Heather’s sister did their makeup and I think she did a beautiful job!
Heather looked so radiant and happy. I loved the elegant simplicity of her dress.
The kids at this wedding were precious.
All day long, we heard reports of how the bad weather was supposed to miss us. Then, about a half an hour before the ceremony, the rain started.
I’ll be honest – things were tense. Guests were arriving, chairs were set up, microphones were plugged in, and here we were looking at suddenly having to move the entire ceremony indoors. Heather had her heart set on an outdoor wedding, and we were all praying the rain would stop in time for their ceremony. Finally, after about a 20 minute delay, the rain slowed and Jeremy made the call to go ahead and risk the weather. A crew of strapping young men (including many guests) ran out and dried off the chairs, and the bridal party rushed into position. I’ve never seen people get ready for a wedding so fast!
Jeremy must be a pro at handling stress. He was all smiles throughout the whole process.
Slowly, the raindrops reappeared.
The minister finished up, let them kiss, and made the official pronouncement: husband and wife!
Now, check out this smile:
Their reception did feature the usual dinner and toasts and cake cutting, and all such events were indeed photographed.
However, things really got rolling when the dancing started…
(This is one of my all-time favorite first dance photos.)
Congratulations, Heather and Jeremy!
