I’ve known Callie for a few years now – we played flute together in the Blacksburg Community Band – so I was secretly thrilled when she was randomly picked as a winner for my spring Facebook fan giveaway. Callie won a bridal portrait along with an 8×10 of her choice, just for being a fan. Click to see highlights from her shoot!
Callie’s wedding was last June, and I have to say, it’s possibly even more fun to do a bridal portrait after the wedding. You know by then what shots you might have missed on the big day, and there’s no great fear of getting the dress dirty.
We shot Callie’s portraits at Sinkland Farms in Riner, VA. They were preparing for their pumpkin festival but didn’t seem to mind having a beautiful bride and her mom and sister and photographer walking about! Thanks so much to the Sinkland folks for having us!
We had perfect weather and beautiful morning light. Callie is a teacher, and my favorite part about shooting other teachers is that they don’t mind getting up early for pictures. Sometimes it’s hard to drag oneself out of bed at 5 or 6 am and get all dolled up for photos right away, but getting that soft morning light is totally worth it. When you see the beautiful blue-green hills in the background, keep in mind that they only look like that before 8:30 or 9 am. Midday, they’re bright and shadowy. Evening, they’re golden. Light changes so fast, and if you want nice outdoor pictures, you have to be willing to chase it a bit. As you’re planning your wedding or portrait session, keep the light in mind! /End rant.
We took a LOT of pictures, but here are a few of my instant faves…

AWww, I played the flute too! which may be why I like these so much! Nah, actually it’s the light, lovely processing and composition and great modeling that make the set for me

Cute bride. I love this location. The rolling hills are just gorgeous and adds so much interest to the images. Good scouting
Nice light, too.

What a hottie! Lovely use of light, colour and vision. I really like the sequence – it would be a great show piece in a gallery/studio for clients to see.

This really makes me wish I’d had bridal protraits done. Maybe if I can ever fit back into my wedding dress I’ll have you take them!! It’s never too late, right?
