I’ve been looking for a camera bag for months, and I do mean months.Everything I’ve seen has either been too small, too large, too boxy, too sporty, too fancy, or too girly.  Or, it’s everything I want but lacks a messenger-style strap.  It’s been a trial, to say the least.  Good camera bags are NOT cheap, and I refuse to pay hundreds of dollars (yes, really – they cost that much!) for a bag I don’t absolutely LOVE.

So, I gave up and started looking for a custom bag designer – someone who could construct EXACTLY what I wanted in function, while still making sure the form looked cool, too.  I wanted something large, sturdy, and modern, that could make carrying 20-30 pounds of equipment (maybe more?) as comfortable and convenient as possible.  And did I mention, it needed to match with everything?

    Spring break!

    Posted in: Personal

I’m on spring break!  I have taken myself on vacation to my cousin’s house in Raleigh, NC.  The aforementioned cousin is away at the beach, so it’s just me, my camera, my car, and a grand piano for a few days.  School has been wearing me out lately, so I’m really enjoying the relaxing time.

Here’s a little bit of nature from the back deck, featuring a fun new swirly border.  (I think these borders will look awesome in a wedding album.)

(I do still have email and web access, so if you’re reading this and wondering about wedding or portrait info, go ahead and do the contact form, and I’ll be able to get back to you soon!)

My  husband is a masters student in the English graduate program at Virginia Tech.  This year, he was put in charge of planning the final dinner/event for their graduate student conference.  He asked me if I would come and take a few photos, and – being a diligent photographer wife – I obliged.  The following shots are from the concluding open mic/reading at Gillie’s, a vegetarian downtown restaurant and favorite of Blacksburg locals.  Click the photo to see more.

We got another 10-12 inches of snow Friday night.  As a teacher, I usually think snow on weekends is a total WASTE.  Especially this weekend, because I had a photoshoot scheduled and a great big new camera to test out (I’m borrowing John Tice’s Canon for a few days to see what I think of that system).  Since I couldn’t get to the shoot, I snapped some photos downtown and then took my dog out for a run in the snow.  Click for more!

2010 is coming in just a few hours.  My plans are pretty boring, but I like them.  My husband and I started a new tradition last year, which is that we “camp out” in the living room by the fireplace and then eat pancakes in the morning.

This time last year, I had just received my new 35mm/f2 lens and a copy of Adobe Lightroom.  I had no idea I’d be starting a wedding photography business.  2009 has been a year of surprises for me.  I thought that by 2010 I’d be a mother.  I’m not a mother yet – that’s been a disappointment – but there have been a lot of GREAT things occur in 2009.   The biggest: I’m a photographer!  Wow.  I can’t believe how many cool people I’ve gotten to meet this year.  I’m working on putting together a portfolio book for myself (I figure I’ll do this yearly) and I’m still so in love with some of these shots.  Beginning a photography business has taught me so much about money, business, MYSELF, how to talk to strangers, etc.  It’s also kept me up way past my bedtime most nights, but I’m working on that.

A couple of “best of 2009″ posts will come shortly.  For now, here’s a message from me and my dog, via the web cam:
