AT HOME WITH LITTLE EMMETT | Family documentary photography

I’ve been in a photography slump.

I’m not sure how it started, really.  Maybe I’ve spent too much time looking at other people’s work and not focusing on my own vision.  Maybe I just haven’t really developed my own vision.  Whatever the reason, for the past few months I have taken picture after picture after picture, and although many were very pretty, I kept feeling that something was lacking.  I felt ready for a change.

So, I was truly excited with my school librarian (who I think is soooo cool) asked me to do some documentary-style photos for her family.  There would be time to focus on small details, no posing required, and not a park bench in sight.  I was greeted warmly at the door by Emmett and his dad, and ushered in to find animals everywhere, cute decor on the walls, a house full of beautiful sunlight, and a sweet, playing, reading, snacking family.  It was exactly what I needed to break out of my little box and focus on taking the shots I really want to take: a reflection of what their daily lives are like at this time.
