Because you don't do it often, booking a portrait session can feel intimidating and stressful. What will you wear? Where will we shoot? Do you want documentary or more classic pictures? Will your kids cooperate? What should you order? Will you really use the digital files? Do you need wall art? What size? And what the heck is a deckled-edge print or a flushmount album?
It's a lot, right? But don't worry. I promise to listen to your vision for these images, to help you plan the perfect outfits and location, and to walk you through the ordering process so that selecting your images is a painless process (though it won't be easy, because you might love them all).
Say it with me: the experience of your portrait session is as important as the pictures themselves.
When you book your portrait session, you are making an investment in images that will become a part of your family history. They're important, and I take that very seriously. I want your photos to be beautiful, and I want your memory of the portrait experience to be a positive one.
The first step in your portrait process is to make a plan for your session. We will work together to decide what mood and style you're going for, where you might like to shoot, what time of year and day would be best, what you might like to wear, and how you might use the images once we're done. You'll get a chance to look over my pricing guide and decide what your budget for the session will allow.
We can do this part in person if you prefer, over the phone/text, or through email.
This step ensures that your portrait date and time are officially on my calendar.
You'll get a simple online contract to sign and an invoice for your session fee, as well as any products you decide you'd like to pre-order. If needed, your invoice total can be split over multiple payment dates (just ask).
Most clients prefer to pay online, which makes this step easy and fast for both of us.
Now the fun part: your session itself.
People often come to their portrait sessions a little nervous or stressed. Don't worry; this is completely normal. Usually, the first few frames feel a little awkward. You'll find that as we walk and talk and play a while, everyone loosens up. Kids settle down, grown-ups relax, and smiles become more genuine. Before you know it... we're done!
Pro tip: Everyone is usually hungry afterward, so plan to grab dinner or a special treat on the way home.
Once your session is complete, it takes me 2-4 weeks to get your images edited and ready to view. I want to be sure your collection is just right when you see it, so I don't like to rush.
Once they're ready, you will get a link to an online gallery where you can view your images and select the ones you'd like to purchase. Alternately, we can do this in person... I find it's sometimes easier to sort through real prints on a table.
Then, relax. I'll get your images retouched, printed, checked, and back to you to enjoy at home.

A typical family or couple's session (about 1 hour) results in 50-60 finished images.
Seniors, dancers, headshots, and other solo sessions result in about 20-30 images per outfit.
can we get the digital files?
Yes! I sell digital files both as a la carte options and as part of my packages.
However, they are not included in your session fee. Your online gallery is for viewing and ordering only, and does not allow downloads without purchase.
how many photos can we expect?
Mini sessions are available as an add-on only. If you've booked a full portrait session, you can add a mini to your collection to be used at another time during the same one-year period. This is a great option for people who need both a family session and a headshot, or families who need a senior session and a family session, or dancers who want portraits twice a year, for example. Mini sessions are best for ages 5 and up, who tend to need less coaxing and warm-up time. They are limited to one outfit/location and last 20-30 minutes.
do you offer mini sessions?
Your session fee covers the session itself, as well as my time spent culling, editing, uploading, and otherwise working with your images. In some cases, it's also used for venue and location fees, props, and (for dancers) special wardrobe pieces.
WHAT IS the session fee for?
I'm just gonna be honest here: they very likely won't... at least not the whole time. The good news is, I kind of specialize in kids who are wild, shy, grumpy, or otherwise not into pictures. I've got one myself! I will not judge you or your child for any uncooperative behavior, and I'll tell you something else... sometimes the best pictures come when they are NOT following directions. Let them explore, play, be noisy, cuddle, snack, cry... whatever they need to do. I'll capture the best of it and you may be surprised by how many great moments we get in the end.
what if my kids don't cooperate?
I usually book portrait sessions about 4-6 weeks in advance. The exception to this rule is October, which tends to fill up very early. If you're interested in Fall portraits, better go ahead and book your session in July or August. If you are looking for spring senior portraits, it's best to book them at least 6 weeks before graduation, so that I can get the images edited, printed, and back to you on time.
when should we book?
Yes! When it fits my schedule, I love to travel for portrait sessions.
I got my start shooting weddings and enjoyed them for years! These days I mostly stick to portraits, but I'm always willing to consider a wedding on a case by case basis, especially smaller weddings, elopements, or weddings that occur during my regular "off" season (December-March).

Yes, I do sometimes photograph parties and events. My event rate is $300/hour and includes access to the digital files. A travel fee may apply to events outside of the NRV/Roanoke area.
Absolutely! I have worked with many families on their reunion pictures. While candids and event coverage are an option, most families choose to do an intergenerational portrait session. These take about an hour and include photos of all your different family groupings. They are fun and usually get everyone good and hungry for dinner!
